This role is part of Blue Origin corporate functions, providing centralized support across Blue Origin business unit teams, functions, and locations.Blue Origin is seeking an experienced Level 3 Facility Design Fire Protection Engineer to join our Facilities Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading fire protection engineering efforts across new construction and existing facility modification projects. You will apply your technical expertise to ensure our facilities meet the highest standards of life safety and fire protection in support of Blue Origin's mission.
Responsibilities
- Lead fire protection engineering design for new and existing facilities, including system design, layout, and specification development
- Perform fire protection engineering analyses including:
- Fire hazard analyses (FHA)
- Egress analyses
- Hydraulic calculations for sprinkler and suppression systems
- Smoke control and detection system design
- Fire resistance rating evaluations
- Develop and review construction documents, drawings, specifications, and design packages for fire suppression, detection, and alarm systems
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards including NFPA, IBC, IFC, and local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) and provide guidance to junior engineers and cross-functional teams
- Coordinate with architects, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers to integrate fire protection systems into overall facility designs
- Interface with AHJs, insurance carriers, and third-party reviewers during design reviews and permitting processes
- Conduct site assessments and inspections of existing facilities to identify fire protection deficiencies and develop remediation plans
- Support development and maintenance of facility fire protection standards, design guides, and engineering policies
- Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs for fire protection systems
- Provide support during construction administration and system commissioning
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state (reciprocity or willingness to obtain additional state licensure may be required)
- 7+ years of progressive experience in fire protection engineering design
- Demonstrated experience designing fire protection systems for industrial, laboratory, manufacturing, or aerospace facility environments
- Proficiency with hydraulic modeling software (e.g., HydraCAD, SprinkCALC, AutoSPRINK)
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards (13, 14, 20, 72, 101, etc.) and IBC/IFC
- Experience producing stamped engineering drawings and design packages
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- SFPE membership or Board Certified Fire Protection Engineer (BCFPE) designation
- Experience with performance-based fire protection design and analysis
- Familiarity with special hazard suppression systems (clean agent, foam, CO₂)
- Experience working with rocket propellant storage or high-piled storage environments
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or Revit (MEP)
- Experience navigating complex AHJ environments across multiple states
- Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering
Base Pay Range for:
