§ 01OVERVIEW

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.
§ 02AS PART OF A SMALL, HARD-WORKING, AND ACCOMPLISHED TEAM OF EXPERTS, YOU WILL SUPPORT ALL ASPECTS OF AERODYNAMIC AND AEROTHERMODYNAMIC DESIGN FOR BOTH ATMOSPHERIC AND TRANSITIONS TO/FROM ATMOSPHERIC FLIGHT FOR VARIOUS SPACEFLIGHT SYSTEMS. YOU WILL SHARE IN THE TEAM’S IMPACT ON ALL ASPECTS OF THE SYSTEMS THROUGH THEIR ENTIRE LIFECYCLE FROM EARLY CONCEPTUAL DESIGN AND CONFIGURATION THROUGH FLIGHT OPERATIONS AND SUSTAINING ENGINEERING. THIS ROLE WILL BE ANALYSIS INTENSIVE, PRIMARILY SUPPORTING DEVELOPMENT AND VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE-LEVEL AEROTHERMAL AND ROCKET PLUME MODELS AND LOADS. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND DOCUMENTATION OF AEROTHERMODYNAMIC MODELS AND DATABASES FOR SPACE LAUNCH AND REENTRY VEHICLES USING HAND CALCULATIONS, ENGINEERING METHODS, NUMERICAL METHODS, AND DETAILED TEST METHODS. THIS WILL INCLUDE AEROTHERMAL ENVIRONMENTS FOR SURFACE FEATURES SUCH AS STEPS, GAPS AND PROTUBERANCES AS WELL AS AEROTHERMAL IMPACTS OF ROCKET PLUME HEATING AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS DURING ALL PHASES OF FLIGHT.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

§ 03MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • 2+ years of experience in the fields of aerothermal or thermodynamic analysis

  • Strong aerodynamic fundamentals and intuition through multiple fight regimes (subsonic, transonic, supersonic, hypersonic, free molecular flow)

  • Proven experience deriving space vehicle aerothermal environments

  • Proven experience with one or more aerothermal CFD modeling tools (LAURA, DPLR, FUN3D, US3D, etc.)

  • Experience with CFD pre and post processing (Pointwise, Link3D, Ensight, Tecplot, etc.)

  • Proven track record using scripting and programming languages for automation and data manipulation

§ 04PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS or higher degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

  • Experience modeling rocket plume environments, both direct impingement and indirect heating

  • Proven experience using Link3D and US3D

  • Experience in Multiphysics simulations of hypersonic flows

  • Experience with tool development using MATLAB

  • Knowledge in the use of 3D CAD tools (CREO)
